A little bit about Joanne...
Hi, I'm Jo, founder and director of Joanne Fitzgerald Therapy. I am a counsellor with many years experience working with children (aged 6+), youth and young adults who have a range of mental health concerns. I have worked in both the community and private sectors, including headspace and for the NDIS. I believe in a person centred, goal orientated approach, and feel that therapy should be a collaboration between myself and my client.
Each individual has their own unique set of strengths, values, and resources which can be used to help them live an enriched, fulfilling life. As your therapist, it will be my role to help you discover new ways to build upon these unique skills.
A little bit about Amy...
I am a psychologist with a passion for helping adolescents and adults navigate life’s challenges. Since 2018, I have worked in community, school, and private practice settings.
As well as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), I utilise Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) in both individual sessions and group settings. I believe in meeting my client where they are at, and working together towards their goals while building resilience and wellbeing.
Mental Health Care Plans are accepted, which will reduce your out of pocket fee when you see Amy.
Why see a psychotherapist?
Psychotherapy works
Psychotherapy has been shown to improve emotional and psychological wellbeing, and is linked with positive changes within the body. Psychotherapy works within a holistic approach to assist you in achieving your goals.
Psychotherapy helps you understand yourself on a deeper level
Psychotherapists work together with their clients to form a therapeutic relationship that helps them better understand their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. By doing so, you are able to develop better coping skills and build resilience.
Psychotherapists care about your long term goals
Unlike other types of therapists, psychotherapists have the capacity to see their clients on a long term basis, working collaboratively to achieve their goals. We will be with you every step of the way.
FAQs

You are not required to obtain a GP referral, and are able to book an appointment with us immediately. For our registered psychologist, Amy, we accept mental health care plans and therefore your out of pocket expense will be reduced. For our registered counsellor, Joanne, there is no rebate available.
Everything that we talk about during our therapy sessions is kept confidential between you and your therapist. There are, however, some limits to confidentiality, and these are:
- If I feel that you are at risk of hurting yourself, or someone else
- If you or another young person are being harmed by someone else
- If I am required by law to disclose information provided in our sessions
In all instances of the above, we will always endeavour to discuss this with you before we break confidentiality. This can be a tough situation for you to navigate, so we will always involve you in the process where possible, giving you as much control as the situation allows.
We offer individual therapy sessions for children, youth and young adults aged 6-30.
Both are required to undertake significant formal education and experience, however psychotherapists are focussed on working with their clients on a long term basis. In addition, while psychologists may be interested in a clients formal diagnosis and working to improve symptoms, a psychotherapist believes in a holistic approach to mental wellbeing (taking in the whole picture, rather than looking at a diagnosis), by working collaboratively with their clients.
